Rubén Esparza
b. 1962, El Paso, TX, lives and works in Los Angeles, CA
Rubén Esparza is a multidisciplinary artist and independent curator, using the insight of both roles to synergy intensely cross-referential physical and temporary works of art and exhibitions, exploring Queer and Latinx histories, existential trauma, and the reconciliation of his heritage that of the colonizer and the colonized within and in conversation with the Western art canon with extensive studies in art, design, and art history. Esparza uses analog materials alongside complex experimental digital-driven works to create sociopolitical / art theories commentary or homage to brownness and queerness. Esparza studied Art History and Graphic Design at The Art Institute of Houston with continued independent art practices and curatorial studies, including Node Curatorial Studies Berlin.
He works with materials that include formal painting techniques on canvas and paper, digital media from online sources, found materials, and self-created within the hybridity of all techniques. Esparza's photography work mainly concerns textures, places, and people. He refers to In the Life with many people in his sphere of fellow artists, curators, activists, and the like, capturing real un-staged moments, moments of happenstance, and realness.
For the artist Rubén Esparza, the concept or jolt of an idea is paramount as a starting point – he is from the school of "the first thought is the best thought. " His work is highly experimental whether it bears fruit or not. Materiality is secondary or tertiary in Esparza's art practices.
Beyond his art practice, Esparza is an activist, organizer, and curator; his curatorial work is woven into and is considered part of his art-making. He identifies as an artist of mixed race (European and Indigenous). While working on various art-making series of projects, he simultaneously curates and organizes exhibitions, events and talks at galleries and museums internationally and around the corner.
He has participated, organized, and curated for many art organizations that include The Getty Center, Beyond Baroque, ONE Institute, Museo De La Ciudad de Mexico, Art Space Mexico, Department of Cultural Affairs LA, Highways LA, The Tom of Finland Foundation, Leslie-Lohman Museum, ICA San Diego, ACE Hotel, Photo LA, University of Minnesota, Self Help Graphics, Human Resources, Santa Monica Museum, Paris + at Art Basel, Plaza de la Raza, Gaythering Art Basel Miami, Patricia Correia Gallery, National Museum of Mexican Art, Museum, Croxxato Galleria Chile, Childs Gallery, Avenue 50, WeHo Arts.
