For the artist Rubén Esparza, the concept or jolt of an idea is paramount – he is from the school of "the first thought is the best thought," whether it bears fruit or naught. Materiality is secondary or tertiary in Esparza's works. With concepts that grapple with identity and experience, in this particular series, the digital, the historical, the libidinal, and the mass-produced are other important subtexts central to these somewhat ready-made artworks.
Presented here are a series of blankets depicting a montage of image details taken from queer pornography and historical European and Indigenous sources – superimposing historical vestiges onto nude brown and white torsos (speaking to the artist's mixed race). Palm trees are affixed to where the figure's crotches should be, rendering the artist's visual exploration of tired delusions of hyper-masculine tropes against the lush and dreamy blue skies of his native California. The artist encourages us to use the blankets for a picnic or a spontaneous convivial moment.
